I am new to the athletic department, having been the Faculty Athletic Representative for slightly less than one year. However, I have fond memories of Gaye from the senior staff meetings. In particular, I remember her sharing a story of Carlos Aragon, a young Hispanic man who was very withdrawn while he was growing up in Orem. His appearance did not bespeak self-confidence or a sense of purpose. However, he joined the marines to serve our country. One Sunday before he was sent to Afghanistan, he showed up in church looking very sharp with his military uniform on. He bore his testimony of the gospel and spoke of the privilege of serving our country. Unfortunately, that service cost him his life. Gaye finished her story by saying that Carlos “got it,” meaning that he had come to understand the purpose of life and of serving others. I am also certain that Gaye got it. She cared about those who were less fortunate. She cared about the gospel.
